Medical investigations

Did you know that internal medicine involves much more than just colic episodes? Indeed, internal medicine is a branch that involves a wide variety of aspects of the equine body and its organ system. Below we've explained a few of the most common medical conditions that we see and the equipment we may use to help diagnose the condition

Common medical investigations

Colic is probably one of the biggest worries for any horse owner. Although some colics do not have a simple cause, others do and using ultrasound and other lab tests can sometimes help to isolate a cause in order to prevent further episodes

Loss of weight – the list of potential causes of loss of weight can seem endless. A good clinical history alongside a clinical exam can guide the diagnosis, often with the help of tests such as blood work, worm testing and diagnostic imaging.

Endocrinology – surely you have heard or dealt with conditions such as EMS and Cushing Syndrome (PPID). These are endocrinologic conditions that we detect very often. It is key to detect, treat and monitor these conditions before we have the sensibly feared laminitis.

Cardiology – whereas some arrhythmias and murmurs can be found and have no clinical significance, it is important to have these localised, analysed alongside the presence/absence of related clinical signs and monitored regularly so we can spot and address any pathology as soon as possible.

Respiratory conditions – from snotty noses all the way through to chronic advanced cases of asthma (RAO, COPD), allergies, infections, we can utilise our in house equipment alongside laboratory test to help diagnose, treat and if necessary manage your horse’s condition.

Ophthalmology – eyes are an emergency! Eyes are very delicate structures that are exposed to many risks daily and are very easily damaged. With our equipment and lab tools we can diagnose, monitor and treat your horse´s eyes.

Pain management – from the internal medicine point of view, we can understand the causes behind the pain in more complex cases. By understanding these causes and physiologic routes, we can select different pain relief modalities to achieve the most complete effect.
