The importance of vaccination
Vaccination is the corner stone of preventative healthcare. In our domestic horses the more individuals that are vaccinated the better the protection that is given to our equine population. This concept of called herd immunity.
Below are a few of the routine vaccinations we give to our horses, with a brief description of the vaccine protocols necessary to provide a degree of immunity.

Influenza / Flu
Influenza Vaccine schedule:
- Vaccine 1: Start of primary course
- Vaccine 2: 21-60 days after vaccine 1
- Vaccine 3: 120-180 days after vaccine 2
- Booster: Dependent on your regulatory / competing body. Most are every 6 months, however if you are not competing yearly boosters before day 365 are necessary to maintain the course.
- Vaccines can be given from 5 months of age
Tetanus
Tetanus Vaccine schedule:
- Vaccine 1: Start of primary course
- Vaccine 2: 4 weeks after vaccine 1
- Booster: Yearly boosters before day 365 are necessary to maintain the course.
- Vaccines can be given from 6 months of age


Equine Herpes Virus (EHV)
EHV Vaccine schedule:
- Vaccine 1: Start of primary course
- Vaccine 2: 4-6 weeks after vaccine 1
- Booster: Dependent on your regulatory / competing body. Most are every 6 months, however if you are not competing yearly boosters before day 365 are necessary to maintain the course.
- Vaccines can be given from 5 months of age
- Pregnant mares should be vaccinated at 5,7 and 9 months of gestation
