Sustainable Practice

Farr & Pursey Equine is embarking on a new ambitious project……

Sustainability is a term many of us are becoming more accustomed too. From recycling at home to buying electric cars, adopting the use of solar panels or even make changes to your lifestyle such as eating less meat – the list goes on. Although many people probably don’t appreciate it may have direct implications on your horse!

Significant changes to our environment as a result of climate change are having impacts globally, but you can also see changes locally. Changes in weather patterns and seasonality all have implications on our equine friends – ranging from warmer, wetter winters, which don’t allow for slow progressive weight loss over the colder months resulting in increased obesity and even subsequent laminitis. Through to more temperate seasons extending parasite lifecycles and increasing the risks associated with increased parasite burdens, such as colic and diarrhoea to name but a few.

It’s important that we all work together in order to help sustain our passion – your horse! Alarming as the forecasting details of the Paris Climate Agreement are if there are no significant changes made, we can all do our own part. Therefore at Farr & Pursey we are hoping to “set the bar high” with the help of Investors in the Environment (iiE). The iiE was founded in 2010 and is a national independent charity which helped design a national environmental accreditation scheme. It is designed to help organisations reduce their impact on the environment, whilst encouraging a corporate social responsibility. So why we are doing this!?!

The answer is simple – we love horses and we want people to continue to enjoy them for decades to come. If our environment cannot sustain horses in the way we have been accustomed in 100 years, then our children and grandchildren will be missing out on a world that has so much to offer. Why wouldn’t we want to help maintain this?

So over the coming months and years we pledge to look internally at our business. Checking everything from the amount of miles we drive, to making sure that products we supply you with is as sustainable as possible. This is not going to happen overnight & is very much a work in progress. However, we have joined the iiE to make sure we are assessed on a regular basis and continue to improve our performance year on year. From your point of view you will probably see little change, although rest assured we are working hard in the background to become as sustainable and as carbon neural as we can.

Keep up with our progress as we intend to update our blog with how things are going!
